Move Highlights

The following describes the function of move highlighting and the meaning of the various highlight colors.

Function

When you click on a piece, the board will highlight any possible cell you may move your piece to.

You may then click on one of the Highlighted cells to mark that cell as the 'move to' cell.

Some players prefer not to have the possible moves marked for them so I've added a User Preference to disable the move highlighting while still allowing the From/To fields to be populated using the point-click method.

If a cell does not change color when you click on a piece that means it is not a legal move for that piece to make.

Highlight colors

Cells are highlighted using different colors to denote the type of move a particular piece may make. The following chart lists each highlight color and it's meaning:

Move From: indicates the cell currently marked as the Move From cell (the piece you're moving)
Move To: indicates the cell currently marked as the Move To cell (where you're moving the piece to)
Possible Move: indicates the cells a piece may move to (without capturing any other pieces)
Attack: indicates the piece may capture this cell *
En Passant Attack: indicates a Pawn may capture this cell en passant *
Castle King's Side: indicates the King may castle to the King's Side by clicking this cell
Castle Queen's Side: indicates the King may castle to the Queen's Side by clicking this cell

* if a cell is marked as Attackable but does not have an opponent's piece on it, then it's attackable En Passant.

* Note that these Highlight Colors may be different for each Board Style, however this page will always show the highlight colors for your current Board Style.
